It’s been just over a year since the convention center completed a $126.9 million expansion. The project added 50,000 square feet of meeting rooms, expanding those capabilities by 50%. It also refreshed existing spaces and created a connection to The Westin Charlotte.
Now with 600,000-square-feet, the convention center has positioned the city to attract larger, higher revenue-producing events.
The Charlotte Convention Center has previously lost out on some major events due to lack of meeting spcae. New renovations have put the convention center on par with competitors, such as Nashville, Tennessee; Tampa, Florida; and Austin, Texas.
It centers around attracting the right business to fill hotel rooms and drive spending in Charlotte’s restaurant, retail and entertainment establishments.
Bookings for fiscal 2023 are pacing at 195% of goal, while pre-bookings are 138% ahead of the target for the next five years. The convention center has already booked 141 events through that time frame — a 43% increase from fiscal year 2022.
