Charlotte Douglas International Airport has nearly reclaimed all of its lost passenger traffic from the start of the pandemic.
The number of passengers traveling through Charlotte Douglas reached a record 50.2 million in 2019 before declining by nearly half, to 27.2 million, in 2020, the first year of the pandemic.
Passenger traffic improved to 43 million the following year and grew again, to 47.8 million, in 2022. Airport executives have said consistently that they anticipate being back to pre-Covid levels by the end of 2024, at the latest.
The airport encompasses 6,000 acres. Of that, roughly 1,500 acres can be developed.
Amazon.com Inc.’s (NASDAQ: AMZN) fulfillment center is an example of the type of projects CLT has attracted and could seek going forward. The airport sold the property to Amazon where the fulfillment center was built on Tuckaseegee Road.
Industrial projects as well as hotels, gas stations and other travel-related businesses are natural fits for the area.
Gentry said that next the airport plans to add a QuikTrip gas station on CLT-owned land on Wilkinson in a land-lease agreement. Employees and passengers alike will benefit from the gas station, she said.
Due diligence is underway with real estate firm Foundry Commercial to redevelop the Steele Creek Presbyterian Church property owned by the airport.
The airport has an annual budget of $225 million and 700 employees. It is owned by city government but self-sustaining for funding and operations.
