A new year means new happenings in and around Charlotte.
1. The Spectrum Center will welcome music legend Barry Manilow on Jan. 21. Ride the Light Rail into Uptown and stop at Aura Rooftop after the show to keep the swanky vibes going.
2. Channel your inner James Bond at Discovery Place’s newest exhibit, “Top Secret: License to Spy.” Patrons will play the role of spy as they explore how technology influences espionage. The exhibit opens Jan. 28.
3. An exciting exhibit eagerly awaited by art lovers and novices alike, “Picasso Landscapes: Out of Bounds” will debut at the Mint Museum Feb. 11. Be awe-struck at this traveling exhibition featuring 45 of the famous artist’s paintings, spanning the life of his career.

4. Celebrate a year of anniversaries at the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Walk the banks of the new Glory Road exhibit before making your way to exhibits honoring NASCAR’s 75th Anniversary. Learn about the legacy of Martinsville Speedway at the exhibit celebrating the raceway’s seventh anniversary with photos, the Ridgeway Grandfather Clock trophy and, in true Martinsville tradition, Jesse Jones hot dogs.
5. Spend the day in Uptown cheering on Charlotte FC at Bank of America Stadium. Don’t have tickets? Take your watch party to NoDa Brewing Company, one of the local breweries in Charlotte FC’s bar network offering live coverage of games all season long.
6. Check out the Green River Revival at the U.S. National Whitewater Center on March 11. This annual all-day favorite features a 5k, yoga, live music and a social-media-worthy backdrop of electric green rafting water.
7. Spend some time in the great outdoors via the 300+ miles of The Carolina Thread Trail or strolling the grounds of Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden when spring blooms are at their peak and live music fills the air with the Jazz at the Garden concert series beginning April 1. Celebrate Earth Day April 22-24 at the annual Anne Springs Close Greenway festival with horse rides, kayaking, guided hikes and even more outdoor activities.
8. Expand your mind with immersive art experiences throughout the city with Charlotte SHOUT!’s annual art festival. Explore live music, innovative installations, engaging events and culinary creations throughout the city.
9. The Wells Fargo Championship returns to Charlotte on May 1. Spend the week catching golf pros on the course, sampling some of Quail Hollow’s famous concessions and browsing the pro shop for all your golf gear wants.
10. Get your thrills at Carowinds. The amusement park celebrates its 50th anniversary with the opening of a new attraction: Aeronautica Landing. Experience the wonder of flight as you soar to new heights in this futuristic attraction.
11. Grab a hot dog and a cold one and enjoy a night under the lights at a Charlotte Knights game at Truist Field. The team celebrates its ninth year in Uptown with 75 home games this season.
12. See a show-stopping concert. Nostalgia is coming for you when Blink-182 returns to Charlotte on July 14. This much-anticipated tour will feature the original members of the punk band with opening act, Turnstile. If country music is more your style, Luke Combs will rock the stage at Bank of America Stadium on July 15.
13. Celebrate Free Fishing Day on July 4. This is the one time per year everyone in the state can fish without a license and the Charlotte area provides lots of places to cast a line. Check out Latta Nature Preserve, Lake Norman State Park or McAlpine Lake at McAlpine Creek Park.
14. Get in gear for sports season with the Bank of America ROVAL on Oct. 8. Keep the sports love going all season long with season openers for Charlotte Checkers, Carolina Panthers and Charlotte Hornets.
